Inmates are working to create 35 steel-framed beds for the St. Benedict Homeless Shelter in Owensboro. The shelter will be getting rid of some of its old wooden beds, so inmates are working to create new ones for people staying there.

Jailer David Osborne says there are several benefits from the inmates' work.

"It's getting winter, and a lot of people will be taking advantage of those beds," he said. "Most of these guys in here are not that bad of people, or not bad people at all. They've made some serious mistakes. They deserve to be in jail. But they also deserve a second chance. And when they get out, it's a whole lot better for them to get out of here with something they've learned so they can contribute to society than just to stay in here and be locked up and warehoused."

Osborne says he expects to drop off the beds within the next couple days.
