The fate of the Evansville Psychiatric Children's Center may again be in the hands of state legislators, but this time they want community opinion. The Council on Evansville State Hospitals, created by the general assembly last June, is being asked to review the services, quality of care, and utilization of the city's state hospitals.

Today the group releases its report on the Psychiatric Children's Center. The report recommends the facility stay open, but says it is underutilized, in part, because of state regulations. Chairmen Brett Neimeier says the EPCC's future is likely in consideration, yet again.

"I would assume that they wanted this report to be completed prior to the full legislature," said Judge Niemeier, "to review whether or not they should close it. So, hopefully this will be used in that consideration."

The council made several recommendations to better utilize the EPCC including review admission criteria, and the process families must undergo to get access to the facility's services, and to improve and expand services.
