Southern Illinois Picks Up 3-1 Victory Over Volleyball

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Four Salukis recorded double figure kills as the Southern Illinois volleyball team grabbed a 3-1 win over the University of Evansville on Friday evening at the Carson Center.
Alysia Mayes and Jessica Whitehead led SIU (19-6, 9-5 MVC) with 16 kills apiece. The Salukis also registered 19 team blocks on the night as Mayes tallied four solo and seven block assists. Leading the Aces (8-19, 3-11 MVC) was Hannah Wilson, who finished with 13 kills and 11 digs. Ashley Ring chipped in ten kills.
Ring notched five kills in the opening set as the Aces put forth a dominant effort before rallying late for the win. Rachel TenHoor had a pair of early kills as the Aces scooted out to a 5-1 advantage. Later, a kill by Ring helped UE take its largest lead at 13-6.
Southern Illinois chipped away at the deficit and made its run. Down 21-16, SIU scored five of the next six points to knot the score at 22-22 before Evansville took advantage of a pair of Saluki errors to grab the 25-23 win. Jessica Whitehead led SIU in the opening frame with seven kills.
Evansville grabbed another 5-1 advantage in the second game before SIU fought back to a 6-6 tie. UE retook its advantage, going up 15-11 on an SIU service error, but Alysia Mayes got SIU back on track, recording three solo blocks and three block assists in the game to help the Salukis take a 19-18 edge. They would hang on to take a 25-22 win as UE had two errors in the final tallies.
In the third set, it was SIU who took charge in the early going as they took a 4-2 lead before stretching that out to a 15-9 advantage. Down 17-12, Evansville reeled off five points in a row as Emma Roberson tallied a pair of kills to tie the game up.
The Salukis retook the lead, eventually going up 24-20, but the Aces put up a fight, scoring four in a row, including two Ring kills, to tie it up at 24. The rally ended, however, as Mayes pushed the Salukis to a win with two game-ending kills.
UE held strong at the beginning of the fourth set, but a 10-0 SIU run would be the difference. With the Aces up 7-6, Southern Illinois took advantage of seven UE errors in the run and never looked back, cruising to a 25-12 win.
Next weekend, the Aces will wrap up the home schedule with a pair of league games. Bradley comes to town on Friday before the Aces host Northern Iowa on Saturday. Game time for the Braves is set for 7 p.m. before the contest versus the Panthers at 5 p.m. Saturday will also mark Senior Night as Jessica Knackmuhs and Hannah Wilson will be honored.
