Tri-State Woman Gives Back to Service Members

A Tri-State woman, who wants to remain anonymous, shares her simple unique way of giving thanks to our service men and women.
One by one a parade of service men and women go by smiling and waving to those lining the streets in downtown Evansville. But, in the middle of all the parade noise is a woman and her sign. "Just to give them the memory that at some point during their service, or after, they were thanked by one of the ordinary people they volunteered to protect," says the woman. She says her name is not important, but the seven words on the sign are. "This was a twenty minute project for me to make this sign, and it has made a difference to so many people."
Since making the simple sign nearly seven years ago, she has taken every opportunity to give thanks. She says it brings her to tears just thinking about a day back in January of 2010. A day when she attended a soldier funeral. She says, "I had a group of Marines walk up and tell me that I will never know how much it meant to them that I was standing alone, on that empty road, across the street from that little cemetery, and that lingers in my mind."
But its her unique past that explains the need to give so much support to these hero's. "I am a native New Yorker. I stood on Broadway and watched the World Trade Center under construction," she says. The service they have given on the war on terror is a very personal thing for me." A seven word sign, giving a lifetime of thanks.
The woman, who lives in Mount Vernon, says she plans to continue to support our American heroes.
