The proposed parking project for Memorial High School passes its final stage today. The Evansville City Council voted unaminously tonight to approve the East side Catholic school's plans to vacate parts of Lodge Ave. and Bennighof Ave. in order to build a new parking lot and soccer fields.
School officials say they want to build a campus for its students that's more convenient and safer for parking. Memorial's president says he's glad to see the community's support for the project.
"Even when we started," said Memorial President Reverend Lawrence Murphy, "one of the council members got up and introduced this by saying what a great project this was for the east side. So, we look at it as not just good for us. I think it's good for the whole community, and hopefully we can work with people to make it work for everybody."
Reverend Murphy says the project will cost over $3 million. He hopes to break ground in the Spring.
