Every American has the right to an attorney --- and the court must appoint one for you if you cant afford it. That may not be the case in Kentucky for much longer. The Department of Public Advocacy only has enough money to pay lawyers to last until April or May. If the state doesnt find money for the department -- public defenders will not be available to those who need them. This could even mean those in jail whove yet to be appointed a lawyer may be released. The Kentucky General Assembly is halfway over. The Department of Public Advocacys problem has yet to be addressed.
