Rockport Officials Filing Petition Against Vectren

Rockport city officials say Vectren's rates are too high -- and they will file a petition to express grievances against the utility company. During a city council meeting Monday, Rockport leaders unanimously voted to file the petition with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The city will ask regulators to review Vectren's rates and coal purchasing practices. Officials say the rates are hindering Rockport's economic growth. The city is inviting other local municipalities in the petition against the utility company.

Vectren released this statement today:

"We welcome the review of our gas, electric and coal filings with the IURC. The coal allegation has been fully vetted and the commission supported Vectren's market-based actions. Those contracts have expired. We continue to be transparent with customers on our electric rates as our environmental investments have indeed increased bills. Finally, our natural gas costs are the second lowest in Indiana.
This is an obvious attempt to divert attention away from the proposed substitute natural gas plant in Rockport. If built, the syngas plant would cost Hoosier natural gas customers more than $1 billion dollars in just the first eight years. The Indiana Legislature is considering a fresh look at the scheme and we are hopeful legislators will act to take the financial risk off the backs of natural gas customers."
