Injuries hurt. They typically aren't fun for the affected player, or their team. But that's not the case for the Mater Dei Wildcats. A lesson they learned after all-state guard and future Indiana Hoosier Maura Muensterman went down with an ankle injury January 5th.
The Wildcats dropped the SIAC final to Castle as Muensterman watched from the bench. But younger players got some valuable playing time heading into postseason action.
"We got some good production out of some sophomores," says head coach Steve Goan. "We've got one sophomore who got in the starting lineup when Maura went down, and she's still starting."
One of those sophomores, Tori Schikel, is one Lady Wildcat who has carried a lot of the load. In the rematch with the Castle Knights, she had 30 points and 17 rebounds.
"We relied so much on [Maura]," says Schickel. "Now that we've played without her, we've learned we all have our own roles, and we have to keep those roles up."
Players and coaches say motivation won't be a factor, even after winning the 2A State Title last year.
"We want to repeat," says Schickel. "We know everyone's going to give us their best shot, so we have to make sure we're going out every night and playing our best."
