In the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, law enforcement is ramping up training sessions on how to handle those situations.

A two day active shooter training session began today in Carmi.  The exercise focuses on what to do if an armed gunman walks into a school and tries to commit a mass shooting just like at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut last year.  White County Sheriff Doug Maier says it's designed to stop tragedies like at sandy hook elementary in connecticut from happening here.  Carmi Police Chief Randy Hamblin says it also gets officers mentally ready to stop a killer.

"All the training we're doing is trying to provide an emphasis on the proper thoughts, proper priorities, and de-emphasize emotions and thoughts that might be counterproductive," he says.

Hamblin says another session will be held in April.
