Formal Inquiry Launched Into Hopkins County Jail Healthcare Provider

By: Michael C. Fehn
Updated: March 8, 2013
Hopkins County Attorney, Todd P'Pool, has opened a formal inquiry into the company responsible for providing inmate services at the Hopkins County Jail.

The inquiry into Advanced Correctional Healthcare comes after what P'Pool calls "a continued pattern of poor judgement".

On one occasion, P'Pool says a Kentucky State Police Trooper was trying to admit a prisoner, who had been medically cleared, into the Hopkins County Detention Center, when an ACH nurse overruled the doctor's decision and ordered the trooper to be locked in the jail for an hour while she decided how to proceed.  According to P'Pool, the trooper requested that false imprisonment charged be filed against the nurse.  A final decision on those charged has not been made.

In another incident, a Hopkins County prisoner was found dead while being held in solitary confinement.  Following that incident, P'Pool says he issued an open records request for video, and documents pertaining to the ACH contract.

"ACH is making a substantial profit by shifting their duties on our local hospital and law enforcement.  It's wrong and I intend to hold them accountable, P'Pool said."
