Church Members React to Monday Morning Fire

First Christian Church members are stunned by the Monday morning fire that destroyed their church.

Beverly Bartlett went to Sunday services at First Christian, enjoying the sermon and atmosphere.

"Last night, I just thanked God for it, and i thought it was a blessing that i was able to see through at night, and I had a wonderful day in church yesterday," she says.

Little did she know, it'd be the last time she would see it as it was. The early morning fire gutted the church, destroying everything from the stain glass windows to the steeple.

"I thought I was dreaming," she says.  "I couldn't believe it."

"it was horrible. It was a horrible, horrible feeling," says Nelda Barnett, a long time member of First Christian.  She says it's a great loss for its members, and Owensboro.

"It's a loss to the community. It's a loss to all of us. We have a big empty feeling right now because our church is gone," says Barnett.

Janey burns works with several church programs, including the food pantry. She says they don't know how much they lost, but Burns says they won't miss a beat.
