The Evansville Police Department wants control over law enforcement for all of Vanderburgh County.

A plan released by the police department Monday in response to a request by the Consolidation Committee, would leave Chief of Police, Brad Hill responsible for policing functions, while Sheriff Eric Williams would be in control of the jail, court security, community corrections, and other constitutionally-mandated jobs.

Chief Hill says he and others in the department looked at the number of calls and determined 185,432 were made for police service in Vanderburgh County in 2009. E.P.D. responded to 145,128 calls, that's 78%.

"We are the larger department. For us to take over those other calls, that's doable for us," said Chief Hill.

E.P.D. has 286 officers and 268 of those are in law enforcement. The sheriff's office has 108 deputies and 78 in law enforcement. The plan calls for the deputies to be reassigned or eliminated through attrition, as E.P.D. hires 32 new officers.

"They would ultimately be replaced and we would replace those deputies with our officers," said Chief Hill.

Hill expects it would be a slow process, ensuring no one loses their job.

While this is the police department's proposal, Hill says he understands the sheriff has a different plan in mind.

"His opinion was for the sheriff to take over the functions, but we differ, and I believe mine is the better option," said Hill.

Hill says the plan presented by E.P.D. will save the city almost $2.3-million.

Chief Hill will now pass his proposal to the Consolidation Committee.

It's likely a plan will be released by the sheriff soon.

A plan needs to be approved in the next month in order to make it on the November ballot.
