UPDATE:
It seems voters in Evansville and Vanderburgh County won't have their say on a city-county government merger this November.
"We are not ready to bring this all together and get it ready for the referendum in November," said Rev. Adrian Brooks, a member of the Public Safety Subcommittee.
That was the consensus of the 12-member Reorganization Committee tasked with deciding whether a city-county merger would appear on this year's ballot.
The public safety subcommittee presented its plan for consolidating law enforcement under the sheriff, but after Becky Kasha, the committee chairperson, noticed discussion among the members, she realized there may be an issue.
Ultimately, the committee decided there are still too many details left to be hammered out, and while they have discussed the issues amongst themselves, they want more feedback from the people.
"I think it's important that the public can think about it the way we have," said Kasha.
For the most part, the people of Evansville and Vanderburgh County who came out to the meeting expressed their belief that the committee made the right decision.
Kasha says there is still a chance the issue could be on the ballot in November, if city and county government agree in the next 30 days. She says, it's not looking likely.
The Reorganization Committee will meet again on June 22, when they'll continue work on the issue.
PREVIOUS STORY:
So far, there still isn't an up or a down vote on whether an Evansville-Vanderburgh government merger will be on the ballot this November.
However, earlier today the public safety subcommittee did take up some remaining issues.
One was central dispatch.
Subcommittee members had voted at a previous meeting the Sheriff would oversee dispatch, but this afternoon, they decided the hiring system was flawed and more information would be needed before they could vote.
Another issue for them was merging the fire services.
The four-member group was split on how to do it and the head of the Reorganization Committee decided that a consultant would be hired.
