Updated: June 26, 2007
Henderson County High School has added another new coach to its athletic department. Just one week after naming Clay Clevenger their new football coach, the Colonels have hired Mark Starns to lead the boys basketball team. Starns was one of sixteen finalists for the position. He most recently lead Johnson Central High School in Paintsville, Kentucky to the Sweet 16 Tournament in 2005. Prior to that, Starns was the top assistant coach at Mason County High School from 2001 to 2005. The Royals made three-straight trips to the state tournament with Starns on the bench. Mason County advanced to the Elite Eight in 2002, won the state championship in 2003 and finished as runners-up in 2004. Starns was the Video Coordinator and a Scout for the Boston Celtics from 1997 to 2001. He was an interim assistant coach under Jim OBrien in 2000. OBrien is now the head coach for the Indiana Pacers.
