The countdown to the high school football season is on. Indiana teams kick off Friday night, August 17th. We start our countdown, with our annual FOX 7 Top 7 Preseason Rankings.
Team number-seven is the Mater Dei Wildcats. Some people think this will be a rebuilding year for the Cats, including their own head coach Mike Goebel. But, Goebels humble nature cant fool us. We almost left Mater Dei out of the preseason poll last year... a year in which the Wildcats advanced all the way to the Class 3A semistates before losing to Indianapolis Chatard.
The Cats did lose 13 key players from last seasons team, including Goebels son, Zach, who was MDs quarterback and linebacker. But, Mater Deis success has been built on tradition, which despite some growing pains, should continue this year.
For the second year in a row, Mater Dei has a quarterback competition. Senior Reid Grossman is competing for the spot under center with juniors Joe Major and Jared Mesker. Sophomore Matt Coudret is also in the mix.
After five years in Class 3A, the Wildcats are dropping back down to 2A this season. Mater Dei won its only state football title in 2A in 2000.
The Wildcats open the 2007 season at South Spencer on August 17th.
