Recycling is one thing we can all do to help the environment. Now, a Daviess County Kentucky environmental group is trying to make that easier in hopes more people will participate. The group made a presentation to fiscal court asking for a curbside recycling mandate. Not everyone was supportive. Jon Cambron is the co-chair of the environmental impact council. "Community is ready for curbside recycling we would like to have city and county government impose a mandate for this." Members of the community and county officials voiced their opinions on the costs, both environmental and financial, of a recycling mandate. The idea is that the county and city would hire an independent company to collect recyclables every week or two. Taxpayers would have to pay two dollars every month for that service. Steve Moreland says, while recycling is important, hes sure citizens dont want that extra fee. "The economic times were living in, county and city schools have hit us with more taxes, and other tax units are taking a chunk of our money, people dont want an extra $2.15 on their bill." A popular counter argument to that was people will pay more than that amount in gas to drive to and from a recycling site. Marjorie flowers has been working on this issue since 1992. She says she cant believe it still hasnt happened. "Instead of debating whether the city and county should be involved the question should be how are you going to make it happened, thats why we pay our elected officials. County commissioners say theyre hesitant whenever someone asks for any kind of mandate. But all parties agree the first step to making recycling a priority is making it a part of your lifestyle. The county commission has decided to appoint a task force to explore the idea further. They say they are eager to work with the environmental impact council on this issue.
