Memorial`s Matt Powless and Castle`s Caleb Schmitt won individual state wrestling championships on Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse. Powless, who decisioned Cathedral`s Frank Troiano 6-3 at 171 pounds, is the Tigers` first-ever wrestling state champ. He finished his senior season a perfect 51-0. Schmitt, a 135 pound senior at Castle, beat Angola`s David Zimmer 3-2 on an escape in the fourth overtime. Schmitt`s final record is an impressive 47-1. Mater Dei senior Nick Dewig fell just short in his quest for an undefeated state title at 145 pounds. Merrilville`s Jamal Lawrence beat Dewig 3-2 in the final match, handing Dewig his first loss of the season. He finishes 45-1, but still has a chance to win another team state championship next Saturday at Center Grove High School.
