Is Mattingly Next in Line to Manage Yankees?

By: Rick Peltier
Updated: October 18, 2007
Evansville native Don Mattingly could be closer to becoming the next manager of the New York Yankees. Joe Torre turned down a one year, five million dollar offer to return to the Yankees bench for a 13th season. The Yankees wanted Torre to take a pay cut from the $7.5 million dollars he earned this past season. But, Joe said No. Torres departure opens the door for "Donnie Baseball" to succeed his long-time friend. Mattingly just finished his first season as New Yorks bench coach. He spent the previous three years as Torres hitting coach. FOX 7 attempted to contact Mattingly on Thursday. But, his agent says Mattingly is reserving comment, at this time, out of respect. Mattingly should address his situation on Friday. Yankees broadcaster Joe Girardi is another top candidate to take over in the Bronx. Bobby Valentine and Tony La Russa are also considered to be in the mix.
