Some Kentucky educators say they feel double-crossed after a program designed to forgive their student loans has been cut.
Teachers are saying what started as an incentive program has become just the opposite.
In 2005 the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority initiated something called "the Best in Class program.
It offered student loan forgiveness to those who signed up to teach underserved areas like math, science and special education.
But citing federal budget cuts, KHEAA recently terminated the program.
A representative from the organization says it plans to lobby congress to get more money.
Until then, the unexpected expense of having to pay thousands of dollars in student loans that were supposed to be forgiven is causing teachers to consider leaving their positions.
Almost five thousand teachers are affected.
The teachers are organizing an advocacy group.
