The company says the increases are necessary to help pay for upgrading power plants and substations. If approved, customers will see their bills go up around $7.00 a month for electric service, and about $3.40 for gas service. The proposal now goes to the Kentucky Public Service Commission.

"We realize the economy has an impact on our customers' wallet and any time we are to increase rates, that impact's their wallets. Having said that, we've invested over a billion dollars in more than 4,000 projects since our last increase and we are asking to recover some of those costs at this point," said Chris Whelan, the company's Vice President of Communications.

If approved, the increase will begin in 2013.
