A burn ban is in place in Daviess County and it's always illegal to burn in the city of Owensboro. But people are still allowed to set off fireworks, as long as it's done in a safe manner. Crews say people just need to practice common sense when celebrating.
"When we have drought conditions you can have a very rapid spread of fire just by having fireworks discharge into a grassy area, causing that to burn and then extend into buildings. So any time we have drought conditions you have to use extreme caution when discharging fireworks. In fact, some communities will even prohibit the use of fireworks during drought conditions," said Battalion Chief Steve Leonard.

Officials say a ban could be imposed if the dry weather gets worse leading up to July 4th. They say the best idea is to simply attend a public fireworks display.
