While thousands of people keep their eye on the golf course this weekend, one man is keeping his eye on the sky. Brad Nelson is a PGA Tour on-site meteorologist at the United Leasing Championship. He works for Telvent based in Minnesota. The company has seven on-site meteorologists who travel around the country for different events.
Nelson uses computers and places equipment on the course to measure wind speed and direction. He gives weather updates through the radio to tournament officials.
"The one thing we don't want to have happen," said Nelson, "is a thunderstorm surprise us here when we have hundreds and sometimes thousands of people out on that golf course. We need a lot of ample warning to get people inside, indoors and away from that threat."
The heat is impacting this event. He says it's rare to move up the tee times because of the heat.
Meanwhile, Nelson says they will have two meteorologists at the Indiana State Fair, monitoring the weather to keep people safe.
