Energy Officers At West Louisville School

By: Sarah Lovett
Updated: February 10, 2009
One of President Obamas new priorities is energy efficient schools. One Daviess County Kentucky school is ahead of the curve when it comes to organized energy conservation, but West Louisville Elementary School isnt going green simply to save the planet. The school has more than ten new energy officers. Theyre students who help remind others to recycle, save water and turn off lights and computers. Principal Morgan says the program helps the environment but it also helps save money. The county board decided to cut one million dollars from its budget in preparation for the four percent funding cut Governor Beshear is considering. The faculty hopes even parents may learn a thing or two from the program. Unfortunately, the majority of West Elementary school childrens parents are already facing the reality of an energy crisis as most of them are still without power.
