State gets federal funds to clean up streams (Frankfort) Kentucky has received nearly 3.5 million dollars in federal money to clean up streams affected by abandoned mines. The Department for Natural Resources said itll use the interior-department funds to abate acidic water in the states coalfield streams. According to experts, acidic water clogs the natural habitat of aquatic wildlife with iron and aluminum sediments that often result in the death of fish, frogs and insects. If stream acid is extremely strong, it may even kill streamside plant life, environmentalists say. (Copyright 2007 Newsroom Solutions, LLC) Delivered by Newsroom Solutions RNS-02-16-09 1514CST
