Coughing is the top reason Americans see their doctor -
causing more than 30 million visits annually.
Humans cough because our bodies are trying to expel an
irritant of some sort from our lungs. There are many different types of coughs,
from hacks caused by acute allergic reactions to scratchy hay fever coughs to
chronic bronchitis. There are also as many cough remedies as there are
coughs.
Learning to identify the distinguishing characteristics
of the cough may help in understanding the source and the
cure.
Conventional over the counter cough medicines can cause
drowsiness and contain dissociative hallucinogens like Dextromethorphan (DXM).
For many adults DMX may be problematic and potentially dangerous and is not
recommended during pregnancy or breast
feeding.
In 2008, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
issued a Public Health Advisory formally recommending that drug-based OTC cough
and cold products not be used in infants and children under the age of two
"because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur."
