TRISTATE -- Residents are slowly digging out from a major after-Christmas storm that has severely impacted travel in the area.

Evansville Regional Airport reported 7.7 inches of snow Wednesday, with other areas of the city recording anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of snowfall. Near-blizzard conditions were felt across the entire Tri-State Tuesday night into the early morning hours on Wednesday. Winds gusts to 35 mph were reported at Evansville airport, with the Huntingburg Airport recording a 50 mph gust early Wednesday. This created near white-out conditions.

The worst of the storm was in Southern Illinois, where areas along and west of Wabash River were pounded with over a foot of snow. 13" of snow fell in Mt. Carmel, Ill., and almost 14" of snow was recorded in Harrisburg.

Blizzard Warnings that were in effect for the majority of the Tri-State earlier were been downgraded to Winter Weather Advisories. Flurries and gusty winds are slowly subsiding as the system exits to the northeast.

Travel is still expected to be difficult through the overnight hours and possibly for the morning commute, especially in areas north and west of Evansville. The main concern are untreated secondary roadways and rural highways where the snow may blow and drift overnight.
