One of the nation's largest government programs is undergoing a major cutback. The Earle C. Clements Job Corps Academy helps hundreds of students receive education and career opportunities.
A new cost savings plan will temporarily reduce the number of available student slots at seven of the nationwide locations including the location in Morganfield, Kentucky. A statement from the organization ensures around six hundred and fifty student slots, at seven centers, will be temporarily reduced through June of this year.
Union County Community Development Director, Garrick Thompson, says this is a major set back for not only students but the communities these students help as well. "If there is a need in the community and they are able to meet that need, I know various businesses throughout the county have had internships with some of the students. I had a student up here for a while. They really do help out community oriented-wide with event and projects like that in the county," says Thompson.
Congressman Whitfield issued a statement saying "The Department of Labor's decision to cut six hundred and fifty student slots at the center is unacceptable," He adds, "This is an arbitrary number." He agrees the government needs to watch it's money and disagrees with this decision.
The Job Corp tells us this is all part of a cost savings plan through their Employment and Training Administration.
