An early morning accident in Posey County is leaving a few rooms vacant at a Mount Vernon motel. Crews were sent out to the Four Seasons Motel just before seven this morning, as a man veered off Highway 62 and ended up driving through one of the rooms. Manager Rodney Cox walks us through the damage, "The man had a diabetic attack and he started a little bit down the road went off the road there, then he came in through here caught our neighbor's mailbox then caught the front of our office and went into a motel room." Crews stayed on scene for about an hour and say the driver's injuries are not life-threatening. The truck did catch fire after slamming into this room. Both hotel staff and first responders say this accident could've been much worse. "There were rooms rented, not the rooms right next door to it, but there was rooms rented on both sides and so we're very fortunate they had left and gone," Cox says. Firefighters received the call as a vehicle fire and accident, but say sometimes they have to physically be on scene to get the full picture. Black Township Fire Chief Jay Price says "You never really know exactly what you're gonna get until you get here and when our guys got here they found a vehicle that was all the way inside the building." The next step, the Four Seasons is working on filling this hole as soon as possible. "Get the insurance down here, get a crew down here and we'll build a wall to insulate that so we can handle tomorrow's weather without things freezing up" says Cox. It'll be a quick process he says as temperatures are expected to drop into single digits. Cleanup crews have been on hand all throughout the day at the Four Seasons, the hotel says it will remain open.
