This takes shake, rattle and roll to a new level. An earthquake simulator was on hand at Joshua Academy. When it comes to earthquakes, the tri state has seen a few and while we don't average many every year, officials are still stressing the need to always be ready. Every county in our area is on either the Wabash Valley or New Madrid Faults, so if an earthquake doesn't happen in the tri-state, we could be affected by ones in Missouri, Virginia and other states. The Indiana Geological Survey is showing these students at Joshua Academy the various levels of an earthquake. Officials say since earthquakes aren't incredibly common in the tri-state they fear families don't take the dangers seriously. "We have earthquakes so infrequently here in Indiana that people kind of get a little complacent and so this provides us an opportunity to raise the awareness about earthquake hazards," says Walter Gray who is helping put on the event. On Monday, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke proclaimed this week as Earthquake Awareness Week. Beyond just running and panicking, preparedness is the real key. "If we can get people thinking about those things, taking those actions now, it decreases the impact of a natural disaster later" Gray says.
