The overnight weather caused about a dozen tri-state schools to get a late start. For Pike County, the school corporation started with a two hour delay but soon decided the roads weren't safe enough and closed classes altogether. But not everyone has a day to sleep in, here at Cradle and Crayons in Petersburg, it's craft time. Today's topic, winter weather in the spring. "Lions yesterday, lambs today, we kind of got it mixed up" says Maria Manges. She believes school could've went on as planned. "I think that the roads aren't that bad I though the two hour delay gave the roads plenty of time to melt, but I'm not the one making that call and it's not up to me." Chief Deputy Todd Meadors with the Sheriff's Office says it's not worth the risk, "We got alot of people on the roadway, we got alot of students driving back and forth to school, we got alot of buses hauling precious cargo, wasn't too long ago we had a Murray State bus come through the county on I-69, have a wreck, had 7 or 8 kids on there that was injured, they were traveling when it was snowy and icy out so its definitely not worth it." The Pike County School Corporation tells us it has almost 40 bus routes and while some roads may be better than others, it can't cancel just one school because everyone uses the same buses. Regardless of the conditions, you'll catch these smiling pre-schoolers here, and some have their eyes on the thermometers, waiting for brighter days. "Ready to get out in the flowerbed and start mowing the grass" Manges says.
