Indianapolis Seeks To Reduce Surge In Murders

By: Melissa Garrett
Updated: March 16, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indianapolis is looking at ways to cut back on a surge in violence so far this year that has led to 30 homicides, compared with 22 at the same time last year.

Police are looking at ways to work with city and social-service agencies, the mental health system and the Indiana corrections department to try to identify the causes and what steps can be taken to stop the trend. The plan is to focus on areas of the city where murders occur most often and try to intervene before the situation becomes violent.

The steps could include a social -service or city agency providing assistance that may relieve financial pressure or mental health workers getting involved by providing counseling that lessens emotional anguish.
