Police are looking into the mental state of a Rockport man accused of stabbing his aunt to death.
It happened Monday night about five.
Police found 54 year-old Terri Ann Smithers on the floor.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
38 year old Jason Watson faces a preliminary charge of murder and made his first court appearance Tuesday morning.
Detectives have learned that Watson is a nephew of Smithers and had just recently started living at her house after moving from Florida.
Indiana State Police and the Rockport Police Department aren't releasing many details about the incident.
When asked about the safety of the neighborhood, Sgt. Dick of the Indiana State Police says, to his knowledge, it's not a problem area and no calls had been made to Smithers's home prior to Monday night.
Investigators are still trying to figure out why Watson was living with Smithers and what set him off.
Watson is due back in court April 2nd.
Until then he remains in jail without bond.
Original report 3/23:
A Rockport, Indiana man is behind bars charged with the stabbing death of a Rockport woman. Around 5:30 Monday afternoon police were called to 24 West Halburge Street, after a reported stabbing. When police got to the scene they found a woman lying on the floor. That woman has been identified as 54-year old Terri Ann Smithers of Rockport, Indiana. Indiana State Police have arrested Jason Watson of Rockport and charged him with murder. Neighbors like James Gipson are very upset. “I'm afraid for my young kids. This is normally a nice neighborhood. This shouldn't have happened to her. She was so young and was just trying to do a good thing by letting him live there. She shouldn't be gone, it's just very sad,” he said.
