One Owensboro building may soon have a lawn as a roof. Its an environmental strategy that could help cut utility costs as well as help prevent drainage problems. Regional Water Resource Agency Director David Hawes says this forward thinking technology could be making its way to the roof of the Riverpark Center. A green roof has a membrane and on top of that grows vegetation. Hawes says the efficiency of a green roof is the insulation factor which reduces the heat off of the roof which is especially important in a downtown, plus it allows the roof to last longer. The soil and vegetation would absorb rain fall, preventing heavy amounts of run-off and even flooding. Hawes is hoping the green roof proposal becomes a reality with the help of some stimulus money. One of the reasons the Riverpark Center roof was picked was because its adjacent to the bridge, this way drivers can see it as they cross into Owensboro.
