Update: Henderson Police say the leak was a result of tampering and theft. They are now looking for the culprit or culprits responsible.
A strong smell of ammonia forced the evacuation of some Henderson businesses late Tuesday night. Police were called to Crop Production Services around 11:00 p.m. and discovered ammonia leaking from a tank. Everyone at the nearby YMCA and The Gleaner Newspaper were evacuated and surrounding roads were closed to traffic. Emergency crews say if you smell anhydrous ammonia in the air your first move should be a call to 911. Henderson County police agencies are investigating and have not determined if the tank was purposefully tampered with.
